Saliva is a unique and complex oral fluid both in sources and composition. More than 2300 proteins and peptides are present in human saliva. Saliva testing, a non-invasive alternative to serum testing may be an effective modality for diagnosis and prognosis prediction of various diseases, as well as monitoring post therapy status by measuring specific salivary macromolecules, examining proteomic and genomic targets such as enzymes, cytokines, growth factors, metalloproteinases, DNA transcripts employing highly sensitive new tools and technologies.
